Union Wins In Federal Ruiing Involving Local American Red Cross
The Heart of America Amercian Red Cross based in Peoria has been found in violation of federal labor laws. The ruling follows action taken by the union, saying the Red Cross changed terms and conditions for employees after they unionized in 2007. Local AFSCME Council 31 says the judgement verifies the Red Cross prevented freedom of employees to unionize.
The American Red Cross Heart of America Blood Services Region has issued a statement, saying they disagree with the federal ruling. The Red Cross believes they have not violated any labor laws, and have acted in good faith. The statement says the Red Cross is reviewing the ruling and considering it's legal options. AFSCME Council 31 represents about 170 employees locally.
Union spokseman Tim Lavelle says the Red Cross Union employees deserve the same respect from management as any other working man or woman does on the job.
The Red Cross says they have reached agreement with 14 local unions in the last four months. Council 31 is still in contract negotiations with the local Red Cross.
