The Better Business Bureau is warning of a phishing scam involving alleged calls from Microsoft.
Vice-president of the Central Illinois BBB, Jessica Tharp, says callers impersonating Microsoft workers claim they've been notified by your virus provider about serious virus issues on your computer.
You are then directed to download a program that hands over remote access to your computer to fix the problem.
The catch? There is nothing wrong with your computer, the caller is not from Microsoft and you've given a stranger access to every piece of data on your computer.
"We saw this very similar scam, even including Microsoft, about his time last year," Tharp tells 1470 WMBD. "I think (the scammers) are hoping consumers have forgotten and they're trying it again."
Tharp says Microsoft has confirmed it does not make unsolicited calls to fix personal computers. If you get such a call, hang up and run a virus scan on your computer.
