Fire in Washington school cancels Early Childhood classes

Early Childhood classes at Central Intermediate School in Washington will not be held today because of cleanup from a Monday afternoon fire. The school was evacuated briefly because of the small fire in the early childhood classroom.

The Journal Star reports the fire had actually been put out with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived, so students were only outside about 10 minutes.

District 51 Superintendent Chad Allaman is quoted as saying a pressurized oil can in a ventilator was punctured during maintenance spraying oil into plastic storage bins, causing the contents of papers and stuffed animals to catch fire.

Students were able to grab their belongings and go home after the fire department gave the all clear.
