It's almost hard to believe, but a sorely missed business is back on it's feet in West Peoria. The famed Haddad's Market officially began serving customers Tuesday morning, only 11 months after a blaze completely gutted the old store. The fire occurred on New Years' Eve, but owner and operator Mark Wrhel says Tuesday was like New Years' of a happier type. Wrhel says while being active in getting the business back on it's feet, the day has been a little emotional and bitter sweet.
Wrhel says he is blessed to have a completely new store, with a new look, modern construction and techology. But, he says he lost a lot of personal items in the old store when it burned to the ground. Wrhel says when the new facility has been operating for awhile, he will be able to reflect a bit more about the former one.
The new Haddad's is located on the same site on West Rohmann. The grocery store is 4,000 square feet largers than the previous complex.
