Bradley student group opposes free condoms

(From WEEK News 25) - A group of Bradley students, parents and alumni are taking a stand against what they believe is an unfairly passed resolution that will allow the university to hand out condoms to students free of charge.

Although the students would not have to pay for the condoms, an additional amount would be added to each student's health fees to cover the cost of the contraceptives.

Members of Bradley Students for Life say the resolution was passed without allowing for input from students; many of whom they say do not want their money going towards the program.

"There are several alumni and parents that are against this. I am against this. They are paying for our tuition. Some students are paying for their own tuition. I don't think it's our responsibility to pay for free condoms. If they want to provide more condoms on campus, then they can sell them. They don't need my money to give them out for free," said Bradley Students For Life Co-President Mary Kanowsky.

Bradley Student Body President Tricia Anklan says that the Student Senate considered many factors including the fact that not all students would want to participate in the program.

She says all students are required to pay health and activity fees regardless of how much they may frequent the programs.

Students we spoke with had a positive feelings towards the new policy but understand why some would be opposed.
