42.5 million Americans traveling for Thanksgiving

Are you traveling to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with family? Triple-A says you won't be alone. Nearly 42-and-a-half million Americans nationwide will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Triple-A spokesperson Beth Mosher says 2.2-million of those travelers will be in Illinois.

That's despite the fact the price of a gallon of gas specifically in the Peoria-Pekin area is 50 cents more than this time last year.

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded in the Peoria-Pekin area as of Thursday is $3.42, down six cents from last week.

Nearly 3.5-million travelers will fly during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a 1.8 percent increase from last year. Mosher says that's despite airfares being 20 percent higher than last year.

Mosher says the higher airfares and less available seats have forced many would-be fliers to drive instead. The remaining travelers plan to take buses, trains or other forms of transportation.

The Thanksgiving holiday travel period is defined as Wednesday, November 23rd through Sunday, November 27th.
