The Salvation Army Tree of Lights Campaign is officially underway. That means you'll see the familiar red kettles throughout the area through Christmas Eve.
Jim and Paula Moore are the honorary co-chairs of the Tree of Lights Campaign. Jim Moore says they have set this year's goal at $1,575,000. That's $145,000 more than last year's goal.
Moore says it's an agressive goal but one that reflects the need of the community. Moore says over 500 families representing 1,800 people signed up for holiday assistance during the first three days after the Army's Christmas Center opened Monday. That's 600 more people than during the first three days last year.
The money raised through the Tree of Lights campaign represents more than one third of the overall annual budget of the Salvation Army in the Peoria area.
While the red kettles are out through Christmas Eve, the actual Tree of Lights Campaign runs through the end of January.
