The Salvation Army cuts the ribbon on its first-ever Veterans Outreach Center in downtown Peoria. The center is at 416 Northeast Jefferson next to the Sylvia Fites Center.
Spokesman Rich Draeger says during the past four or five years it was noted around 25 percent of people showing up at the Army's emergency shelter were veterans.
The Salvation Army is getting support from the Veteran's Outpatient Center, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Disabled Veterans, Department of Veteran's Affairs, VFW's and American Legions.
Draeger says the Center will provide various services for veterans, privacy for one-on-one counseling sessions and meeting room space for group sessions.
The Veteran Outreach Center is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
