It's official -- 18th District Republican Congressman Aaron Schock of Peoria is throwing his support toward Mitt Romney in the race for the GOP Presidential nomination.
Schock tells WMBD's Greg and Dan he's been impressed with how Romney has performed in recent debates. "I think the economy is going to be the number one issue a year from now," says Schock. "We need someone with a track record of being electable and also being able to do the job once in office. So, ultimately I decided to support Mitt."
Romney ran for the GOP nomination in 2008 before losing to John McCain.
Schock, in a separate interview with 1470 WMBD News, says the recent controversy surrounding businessman Herman Cain did not completely sway his decision. "I also think it's important to have someone who has served in some level of government and someone who's been vetted," explains Schock.
"When you've never run for office before you don't know really who you're nominating. We've had that problem in Illinois with Jack Ryan and Blair Hull on the Democratic side where things came out about them because they never ran for office before," Schock says.
"I'm not suggesting that's the case with Herman (Cain) but I think we're seeing some of that play out right now."
Schock says the two will campaign together in Iowa. And, Schock says he hopes to get Romney to visit his 18th District before Illinois' March primary.
