Salvation Army Christmas Center open

The Salvation Army's Christmas Center is now open. The Sylvia Fites Family Service Center at 417 NE Jefferson in Peoria is converted into the Christmas Center this time of year.

The Army is now taking applications from families seeking help during the holidays. Salvation Army spokesman Rich Draeger says that includes those wishing to receive food baskets, any of the Salvation Army toy programs, holiday parties and Coats for Kids.

Draeger says the money raised each year during the Tree of Lights Campaign goes toward programs such as this.

The Christmas Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 til 4 and Thursday from 1 til 7.

Individuals signing up need to have proper ID showing their current address. And, for those with children, a copy of the child's birth certificate or medical card.

This year's Tree of Lights Campaign starts this Friday and it's also when you'll see the familiar red kettles.

The monies raised during the Tree of Lights Campaign comprise more than a third of the overall annual budget for the Salvation Army in the Peoria area.
