Man Found Along I-74 Dies

One man is dead after apparently falling or jumping from an I-74 overpass in Peoria.

The victim was discovered around 11:00 a.m. Tuesday beneath the University Street overpass along eastbound I-74.

“At this point we do not know what occurred other than that it appears he was not struck by a vehicle,” says Peoria Police Lieutenant Scott Cook.

The victim was transported from the scene by ambulance in what police at the scene described as “critical condition.” Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says the victim later died in the emergency room at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Police have not determined if the victim fell or the incident was a suicide attempt.

“There are some indications that he may have jumped. That is one angle we are looking at,” says Lt. Cook.

Two lanes of eastbound I-74 were closed for nearly an hour and 15 minutes during the investigation.

More information will be posted as it become available.
