Man Who Died After Arrest Identified

Authorities have identified a Pekin man who died after being taken into custody.

The Tazewell County Coroner’s Office identifies the victim as James Morris, 32.

Pekin Police say an officer performed a traffic stop in the 1400 block of Lake St. in Pekin at 5:43 a.m. Saturday. It was discovered Morris, who was driving the vehicle, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

The officer called for backup and after another officer arrived Morris was taken into custody without incident.

While being transported from the scene, Morris complained he was having trouble breathing. Officers pulled over and requested medical assistance. Shortly after pulling over, it was discovered Morris was unresponsive and not breathing.

Officers performed CPR until medical personnel arrived. Morris was transported to the emergency room at Pekin Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The results of an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death are pending.

As per Pekin Police Department policy, Illinois State Police Crime Scene and Illinois State Police investigators were called to the scene and are conducting the investigation.
