Loaded Gun Detected At Chicago Airport

(AP) – Security screeners at Chicago’s Midway airport have discovered a loaded 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun in a passenger’s carry-on luggage.

The Transportation Security Administration says the firearm was discovered Thursday. David Weber, 43, of suburban Shorewood was planning to fly from Chicago to Las Vegas. The agency said in a statement that Weber was arrested on a local charge.

It was the eighth firearm discovered this year in carry-on luggage at Midway. Nationwide, TSA screeners found more than 2,200 firearms last year.

The maximum civil penalty for a single violation is $7,000.

Firearms are prohibited in carry-on luggage, but can be transported in checked bags if they are unloaded, properly packed and declared to the airline.
