A new awareness campaign is underway to search for missing Alzheimer’s patients.

Illinois State Police have launched “Silver Search,” much like the Amber Alert for missing children. The state police will use several resources to spread the word about a missing Alzheimer’s patients, including Illinois Department of Transportation message boards on Illinois’ interstates and tollways.

If a patient goes missing, their information, license plate number and vehicle make and model will be posted on the digital signs.

Alerts will also be broadcast on Illinois lottery terminals at the lottery’s retail locations throughout the state.

The state police says more than 220,000 thousand people are living with Alzheimer’s in Illinois. It’s estimated 60 percent of those with Alzheimer’s will wander off at some point after their diagnosis.
