A giant, Honest Abe is coming to Peoria.
A 31-foot, 19-ton painted sculpture depicting Abraham Lincoln and a man holding the Gettysburg address will go up next to the Peoria Riverfront Museum.
Entitled “Return Visit,” it will be installed off the museum’s Sun Plaza at ground level next to Water Street.
The massive statue is being moved from Chicago and is about five times the size of Lincoln himself.
A special crew will bring the structure to Peoria, where it will be planted during a free, installation ceremony beginning around 11 a.m. Sept. 19. The ceremony is free to attend.
“There has never before been a sculpture like this one in central Illinois and we are proud to bring it from Chicago to Peoria in time to promote the Illinois bicentennial in 2018,” said John Morris, museum president and CEO.
Concrete to hold the sculpture up is being donated by local businesses.
