A Fulton County teenager is dead after being struck and killed while walking on a county highway.

Fulton County Coroner Steve Hines says Charles Montgomery, 14, was walking on County Highway 5, or the Canton-Cuba blacktop, around 7:38 p.m. Saturday when he was struck from behind by a vehicle.

The driver stopped and called 911. Montgomery was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hines says the boy was wearing a dark colored coat and dark blue jeans. An autopsy Sunday revealed the cause of death as blunt force trauma.

The Journal Star reports Montgomery was an eighth-grade student at Ingersoll Middle School in Canton.

Principal Wayne Krus distributed a phone measage to school families and staff Sunday notifying them of Montgomery’s death. Krus said members of the school’s crisis team and staff members will help students cope with the loss of a classmate.
