Former Peoria Officer Sentenced For Child Porn

Peoria County Sheriff's Office

A former Peoria police officer is sentenced to five years in prison in Peoria County Circuit Court.

John McCavitt, 36, was convicted in July 2016 on 15 of 17 counts of child pornography and aggravated child pornography possession. McCavitt will get credit for the 15 months he’s served in the Peoria County Jail since his conviction.

The Journal Star reports McCavitt’s sentence also includes four years probation, restricted internet access and only supervised visits with children. McCavitt must also register as a sex offender.

Evidence presented during McCavitt’s trial pointed to what was described as thousands of images on his computer between April 2011 and July 2013, when police seized the computer.

McCavitt was fired from the Peoria Police Department about a week after his conviction.
