A vacant apartment building in Chillicothe was the scene of a fire.

Firefighters were called to the boarded-up structure at 721 North Third Street around 11 a.m. Friday.

The Journal Star reports intense fire, heat and smoke forced fire crews to remain outside the building dousing the flames with water after they first arrived. Chillicothe Fire Chief Mike Denzer did not allow crews to enter the burning structure.

The building had been empty for nearly four years and there were no utilities connected. Denzer said, because of that, the fire would be investigated as an arson.

There were no injuries.

Chillicothe firefighters were assisted by manpower from the Akron-Princeville, Dunlap, Lacon-Sparland and Henry Fire Departments.
