A Freeport, Illinois man is dead after being struck by an Illinois State Police vehicle.

The accident occurred at 4:19 a.m. Saturday at Route 116 and Centennial Drive in East Peoria.

State Police say preliminary investigation shows an Illinois State Trooper was driving in the left lane of Route 116 when he struck a pedestrian walking in the middle of the unlit highway. The Trooper did not have time to react before striking the subject.

The Tazewell County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Jarett Simons, 44. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.

“It saddens me to announce a pedestrian was fatally injured during a tragic traffic crash along Illinois Route 116,” said ISP Captain Steven Riesenberg in a news release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the deceased and their family.”

The Trooper, who has not been identified, was not injured but was taken to a local hospital to be examined.

The investigation into the accident is continuing. No further information is being released.
