State Fair Unveiling Hefty Butter Cow

What weighs 500 pounds, and is made completely out of butter? It's the butter cow sculpture at Illinois State Fair.

The butter cow is being unveiled Thursday afternoon at the Diary Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.

The 500-pound bovine is made completely out of unsalted butter, and is built from scratch each year.

It's been an unofficial mascot of the state fair since the 1920s.

Fair organizers say they haven't changed security procedures after vandals threw paint on a butter cow in Iowa last year. The refrigerated case holding the Illinois sculpture is always locked.

The Illinois State Fair butter cow will be on display through August 17th.
