He's been a teacher, a firefighter, a county auditor and now a State Senator. But Mike Frerichs wants to be State Treasurer.
The Gifford, Illinois Democrat officially kicked off his campaign with a stop at Peoria's Labor Temple. Frerichs promises to bring accountability and efficiency back to the treasurer's office.
"On the first day in office I will order and audit of that office," Frerichs says, "to make sure we're getting the most for our money and we're taking politics out of the office."
Frerichs points to his experience as a County Auditor.
"In this race I am the only candidate who is a Certified Public Finance Officer. I think that's an important thing we need in Springfield."
Frerichs says another of his priorities will be to invest in companies who invest in Illinois.
"If you invest in an Illinois company or invest in Illinois infrastructure, you can get a return on your investment," Frerichs says. "At the same time, you're putting people to work here in this state not in Texas or in California."
Standing 6-foot-8, Frerichs' slogan is "Standing Tall for Illinois."
Frerichs is unopposed in the March primary. He'll face either Republican State Representative Tom Cross or accountant Bob Grogan in November.
