A child was rushed to the hospital after being hit by a car on a busy street in Central Peoria.
The kid was hit around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of University St. and McClure Ave. Witnesses said the victim appeared to be "in pretty bad shape," suffering from what looked like a severe head wound.
Peoria Police Sgt. Mike Patterson says the child was trying to cross University St., south of the crosswalk at McClure, when the accident happened. The driver, Patterson said, was going through a green light and didn't see the kid in time to stop. Witnesses say the child was dragged several feet before the driver was able to stop the car.
Patterson was not able to confirm how bad the child's injuries were.
Traffic on southbound University was completely blocked while police cleaned up the wreck, while the northbound side was reduced to one lane.
