A previously quiet village of about 500 people in Marshall County has recently been mired in controversy on several fronts. The opening of strip club has caused division with Sparland village officials. There have been questions of legitimacy of certain "proxy" votes during meetings. Now, two-thirds of the people in public positions have resigned. That leaves three trustees remaining. And, another of the 3 is reportdedly considering resigning, too.
Scott Mulford, Deputy Presss Secretary with the Illinois Attorney Generals office says his agency is aware of problems with Freedom of Information and Open Meetings Act accusations. Mulford says about a half a dozen complaints have been filed with his office in the last 12 months. He says a few are double filings and he says a couple have resulted in no violation. But, he says with so many public officlas stepping down at once, it does create a problem with workings within the village.
Several calls by 1470 WMBD News to Village Attorney Elizabeth Beck this week have not been returned.
