Governor Quinn Open To Legalizing Medical Marijuana

Governor Pat Quinn today told reporters he's "open minded" to legalizing medicinal marijuana for patients with serious illnesses. Quinn says he recently met a veteran suffering from war wounds, that has found some relief from the pain by using medical marijuana. The Illinois House is expected to vote today on a bill that would create a pilot program.

If approved, physicians who have an existing relationship with a patient would be able to prescribe medical marijuana for specific illnesses. Patients would be limited to buying 2.5 ounces of marijuana from state regulated sources. Supporters say marijuana can relieve pain without the side effects of prescription drugs. Opponents say 2.5 ounces is too much and could give patients an opportunity to sell what they don't use.
