Taking an historic warship from its current home in Evansville, Indiana, won't be easy for the City of Peoria.
An Evansville man has created a "Keep LST 325 In Evansville" petition trying to drum up support to keep the ship where it is. The petition has the support of the Evansville mayor, and has already gathered thousands of signatures.
An LST 325 board member told 1470 & 100.3 WMBD last week that he was "torn" about making the decision, since Evansville has a deep connection with the ship. Many of the LSTs that were used in World War II were manufactured in the Indiana town, and the LST 325 has been a prized possession for several years. However, a lack of promotion and a poor location have the board looking to put the ship elsewhere when its current contract with Evansville expires at the end of the year.
The Peoria City Council is set to vote on offering a contract to the LST 325 board at its Tuesday night meeting.
