Driver In Fatal Crash Indicted

A West Peoria man has been formally charged for his alleged role in a fatal car crash.

Jeffrey Steele, 22, was indicted Tuesday. He’s facing two counts of aggravated DUI for the August 10 crash that killed Doris King. Peoria police believe Steele was drunk and speeding down Sterling Ave. early that morning when he rear-ended King’s car near Westminster Ave.

The impact sent both cars flying down the road about 500 feet, according to police. King was pronounced dead at the hospital. Her four-year-old granddaughter suffered serious injuries. Steele was treated for minor injuries before he was arrested.

Steele remains held on $200,000 bond. If convicted, he could see 14 years in prison for King’s death and 12 years in prison for injuring the child.
