The Board of Peoria Public Schools will be asked Monday night to approve slashing about 300 positions for next school year. Interim Superintendent Norm Durflinger says the staff cuts are a reality of the district's financial situation due almost totally to lack of state funding. The cuts affect mostly non-tenured certified teachers and staff. Durflinger says another round of suggested cuts involving roughly 200 teaching assistants and attendants will be presented to the board withing the next few weeks. Durflinger says the board will also be asked to eliminate high school summer school this year. He says 5 to 6 positions in Administration will be eliminated and duties combined in some cases. Durlflinger says no student programs will be cut next year, but staff will be as tight as you can get to operate the district.
