Concussion Training Required By New Law

(AP) High school coaches and athletic directors now must take a concussion training course under a law signed by Gov. Pat Quinn.

The law requires the Illinois High School Association to develop an online certification program.

Quinn says the idea is to reduce and prevent concussions among athletes. The Chicago Democrat signed the measure Tuesday at a school on Chicago's South Side. The law takes effect immediately.

Studies indicate that concussions in children and teens have increased in recent years, along with awareness about the dangers of head injuries.

IHSA director Marty Hickman says the online course takes a few hours to complete and must be taken every two years. The training centers on preventing and recognizing concussions. Athletes also will get awareness training.
