City Agrees To Lend Cops To Schools

An agreement that puts armed police officers in some Peoria District 150 schools has been finalized by the City of Peoria.

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the deal, which was likewise green-lit by the D150 Board of Education the previous night. The agreement places a cop at each of the district’s high schools and Woodruff Career and Technical Center.

The arrangement has technically already been in place for several months. The city sent some of its cops to patrol the buildings since January. The agreement then was made as a sort of stopgap after it came to light that the district’s School Resource Officers could not legally carry guns.

Right now, the agreement is good for one year. The police department is looking into a grant that could extend the deal by three more years.
