(From Bradley University) - Bradley hung with Wichita State throughout Saturday’s Missouri Valley Conference women’s basketball game at Renaissance Coliseum until the Shockers used an 11-2 run in the closing stages of the second half to extend their win streak to five consecutive games with a 71-58 victory.
The Braves (9-5 overall, 0-2 MVC) were looking to end the longest home stand in six years on a high note and avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this season, but the Shockers late run put the game out of reach.
Senior Leah Kassing turned in her fourth consecutive double-double, collecting 20 points and 13 rebounds. The first BU player with four consecutive double-doubles since Carrie Coffman had nine straight in 1994-95, Kassing was 8-for-15 from the field.
Kassing’s double-double was her team-best seventh of the year, marking the most by a BU player since Sonya Harris had seven in 2009-10. Freshman Shronda Butts joined Kassing in double figures in 10 points, while Katie Yohn scored eight points in the second half after going scoreless in the first half. Yohn had a streak of eight consecutive games in double figures snapped with the eight-point outing.
Chynna Turner was 7-for-7 from the field and turned in her second straight double-double with 19 points and 12 boards to lead Wichita State. Haleigh Lankster followed a scoreless first half with 15 points in the final 20 minutes and Jessica Diamond helped highlight the win with 13 points and three assists.
The Braves play five of the next seven games away from home, beginning with Thursday’s game at Southern Illinois. Live coverage begins at 6:40 p.m. Thursday on 1290 WIRL.
