Boy Scouts kick off celebration of 100 years

The celebration of 100 years of the WD Boyce Council Boy Scouts of America kicked off Monday morning with the launch of a new campaign to recognize heroes of Scouting.

100th Anniversary Chairman Jim McConoughey says the program honors those who have taken scouting to a new level. He says five local heroes will be recognized who attribute the success in their lives in part to the lessons they learned as a boy scout.

The first two Heroes of Scouting were introduced. They are Dr. Steve Bash, a pediatric cardiologist with the Children's Hospital of Illinois and NASA Astronaut and Pekin native Scott Altman.

Many events are planned in the next eight months in honor of the 100 years of the scouts, including naming the other three scouts to be honored as a hero. More information is available at www.alwaysascout.com.
