Officials say they had positively identified the person whose body was found near an East Peoria shopping center.
The Tazewell County Coroner's Office said Friday morning that Ryan Sailors, 36, was found dead in a wooded area behind Fondulac Plaza on Wednesday afternoon. A 12-year-old boy stumbled across his body while searching for his cousin, who had been missing for a couple of days. The cousin in question has since been found, alive.
Sailors' sister had earlier announced it was her brother. She said the fact that the body was found surrounded by empty compressed air cans was evidence enough. Sailors, who'd been suffering from depression, was known to huff aerosol products. It was also not unusual for Sailors to hang out around Fondulac Plaza, she said. The clothing on and the height of the body were also key pieces of evidence for Sailors' family.
Officials say it appears Sailors had been dead for a few a weeks, based on the advanced state of decomposition. An autopsy was performed Thursday, but the cause of death has not been released.
Early reports from law enforcement indicate foul play is unlikely.
