A Tough Year Financially For Civic Center

The Peoria Civic Center lost a lot of money in the fiscal year that ends this month.

The Civic Center had a shortfall of $875,000, much more than their projection of $96,000.

"The biggest problem this year was we were down about 150,000 in attendance," said Peoria Civic Center General Manager Jim Wetherington.

Wetherington says the tornadoes in November, delays in hotel construction downtown, brutal winter, and issues related to the Peoria Rivermen hockey team all affected the Civic Center's bottom line.

Overall attendance for events was down 23-percent from last year at 520,000.

To try to help make up for losses, the Civic Center has cut 14 full-time position since 2010, and made 4 more cuts since January.
